*October Loving*

If I could plan an almost perfect fall weekend, this past weekend would have been pretty darn close. We had a wedding, a baby shower, an at home date night, brunch, and family time! Lots of fun, family, friends, and yummy food!

Josh and I had Friday off of work due to a mandatory shutdown of our facility. Even though I was kind of frustrated we had to take our own PTO when it was mandatory, it worked out really well to have the day off. We slept in (I slept until 8 am…contact Guinness World Records, that is so late for me!), lounged around, and caught up on some of our tv shows. I was able to get all our meal prep done for the upcoming week as well. I love getting that off my list of things to do, it makes me feel so prepared for the week. I spent some time doing “girly” stuff like painting my nails, sipping on my pumpkin spice brulee tea, and watching Will & Grace. It was a wonderful relaxing, pampering afternoon before heading up to our friend Almitra’s wedding.  

We had to stop at Starbuck’s on the way up and it just isn’t a trip to Starbuck’s without a cake pop!

Almitra and Tim got married at the Avon Wedding Barn, which was so very adorable! The wedding ceremony was held outside under a huge tree with leaves just starting to change colors for the fall. The ceremony was officiated by one of their close friends and was really sweet. I just love love. And weddings.

After the ceremony, we headed inside the barn for appetizers and drinks- veggies with ranch dressing and cheese spread and crackers (I ate so much cheese spread, I forgot how much I love it). We had some great friends to sit and catch up with while we waited for the wedding party to come in, which made it even better.   

For dinner, City Barbeque was the caterer. I stuffed myself with all the delicious food- corn pudding, green beans, pulled pork, brisket, and cornbread loaves. Several of our friends had told us to try City Barbeque out and I’m happy we finally got to. For dessert, we had mini cupcakes from Gigi’s Cupcakes. Naturally, Josh and I tried one of every flavor to see which we liked best. We had chocolate chip cookie dough, red velvet, wedding white, and chocolate to choose from. They were all really good (my faves were the cookie dough and wedding white) and the perfect size to feel like you indulged but didn’t overdo it.  

Saturday started with our usual lifting session at the gym followed by mobility and a great workout during class. The workout involved stations of rowing, toes to bar, shoulder to overhead, and rest. My favorite part was the rest haha just kidding (maybe)! When we got home, we ate lunch then it was time for me to get ready for my friend Brittany’s baby shower. I hadn’t seen Brittany for several months, so it was really nice to see her and spoil her and her baby boy! We had lots of yummy treats (pizza dip, queso, veggies, chocolate dipped pretzels, cake pops, and cake) and even played a few baby shower games. I know most people think shower games are extra cheesy, but I always enjoy playing them. I even won the word scramble game and got a prize- hand soap and the cutest pumpkin pot holder, oven mitt, and decorative towel!  

When I got home from the shower, Josh had dinner all ready for us. We had a yummy meal of chicken sausages, sauerkraut with apples, zucchini, onions, and green peppers. I snagged a few cake pops and pretzels from the baby shower, so we had some dessert too. We decided that wasn’t enough for dessert and we should probably make some snickerdoodles to make ice cream cookie sandwiches with. Josh found a great recipe for snickerdoodles and set about making them. The recipe was especially great because it only made 4 cookies…which saved us from feeling like we had to eat the whole several dozen a normal batch would make! We scooped Jeni’s Splendid Sweet Corn & Black Raspberries ice cream in between the warm out-of-the-oven cookies and it was amazing! We will definitely be making these again soon!

Sunday morning was another slow going morning. We had breakfast, drank our hot tea, and watched tv. As we were finally getting ready for the day, Josh suggested we try out Toast on Market in New Albany for brunch. I’m always game for trying new places and this one had been on our list for a long time. We arrived around 11:30 which was quite possibly the busiest time ever. We put our name in and began our thirty-five minute wait for a table. When we finally were seated, I was really excited to order. I got one of the specials of the day- apple pie French toast with cheesy hash brown casserole. Josh ordered the drowned eggs. We also ordered a lemon soufflé pancake and a pumpkin spice pancake a la carte. I thought the apple pie filled French toast was the best of our dishes. Overall, the food was pretty good, but I was expecting more (I think we’ve been spoiled with places like Tupelo Honey, etc. on vacations). I would probably eat there again, but I’m definitely willing to try other places before going back.  

  

We headed home to pick up Rocko and go to my parents’ house for the afternoon. All of my siblings and their significant others were there to celebrate my brothers’ and my brother-in-law’s birthdays. My mom fixed lots and lots of food for us to snack on. We had green pepper jelly on cream cheese with Ritz crackers, sausage/cheese stuffed jalapeño poppers, and pumpkin fluff with graham crackers. We all got our fill of snacks and headed out to the garage to decorate pumpkins. Normally, we would carve pumpkins, but this year we all decided to try something new and paint them. I think they turned out pretty darn great! And they’ll last much longer than if we had carved them, hooray!

After we finished up with our pumpkins, it was dinner time! I wasn’t even hungry, but when it’s a home cooked meal from my momma that doesn’t matter lol. We had chicken and tilapia with onions and bell peppers (think fajita insides), deviled eggs, rice, beans, and my grandma’s homemade German potato salad (*drool*). And don’t forget dessert- funfetti cupcakes with rainbow chip icing, homemade sweet cream ice cream, and peanut butter rice krispies with chocolate ganache on top!  

There’s nothing like a weekend of celebrating love, babies, family, and food to rejuvenate your soul!

Fiestas & Family

Fiesta like there’s no mañana! There couldn’t have been a better theme for this Cinco de Mayo weekend. It was packed full with a Cinco de Nacho community workout at the gym Friday night, Cinco de Drinko game night at Ethan’s casa Saturday, and Cinco de mi Momma’s birthday Sunday. Ok, so maybe that last one was made up. Doesn’t matter. The weekend was awesome, the end (How adorable is our little monster?!).

Friday was Cinco de Mayo. It also happened to be the first Friday of the month, which is when CF Ripcord hosts a free community wod and pitch-in. We host this in hopes of getting our name out into the community and bringing in new people that are maybe cautious about trying CrossFit for the first time, but also for all our current members to get together for fitness, fellowship, and tasty food. It was quite possibly my favorite community wod we’ve hosted thus far, in large part because my bestie, Des, and her hubby, Chris, surprised me and came up to workout with us. I don’t get to see her very often, so any time together is much cherished. We had a fun team relay workout set up involving a rower/assault bike, GHD sit-ups, dumbbell snatches, air squats, and handstand walks. One of my favorite aspects of CF is that absolutely anything and everything is scalable, which means that any movement can be scaled back or modified. Not every person who walks into the gym has touched a barbell before or is capable of doing a pull-up or bar muscle up, etc. There are several different progressions and skills that can be done until that person feels comfortable and can perform the prescribed movement with proper technique. I am unable to do handstand walks (upside down and walking on your hands…are you kidding me, that’s scary! The fear factor there may or may not be why I still don’t have a handstand walk lolol) at this time, so I did bear crawls instead. Some people had never been on a GHD so they did abmat sit-ups instead. No matter what version of the movements was being done, people were pushing themselves and working hard. It’s such an experience being surrounded by friends working through a tough workout together. After the workout, we had a Cinco de Nacho nacho bar complete with chips, homemade salsa and guacamole, chicken/turkey/beef, queso, and all the other toppings you could want. Don’t think we didn’t have some delicious desserts to share too- homemade white chocolate macadamia nut and chocolate chip peanut butter cookies as big as your face and moist pumpkin white chocolate chip cookies being my favorites. As much as I love the workout part of our community nights, the time spent sitting cross-legged on the gym floor in a giant circle talking and eating with everyone tops it all.

Saturday was the last day of our deload week on this cycle of our RP Hypertrophy templates. I’m very much ready to get back into the swing of things and do regular CF class on top of our accessory stuff, although I must say it has been kind of nice getting home “early” every evening and having more time to just chill together. We got our lifting in then jumped into the mobility class lead by Ryan. I love that class! I never realize how tight or sore I am from a week of lifting and CF until Ryan starts leading us through different stretches. Swole and flexy, people, you can’t have one without the other. When we got home, we started right to meal prepping for the upcoming week- pork loin, broccoli, green beans, and veggie “chili”. We’ve got our routine down pat now after meal prepping for ~18 months with RP. I portion out all the meat while Josh cooks up the veggie chili. Once the chili is done, I portion that out into as many meals as possible, then fill in the remaining meals with green beans and broccoli. Voilà! It’s as simple as that. We had plans to go to a taco party/game night later, so I made some seven layer dip while Josh whipped up a batch of scrumptious Berries & Cream cupcakes from Life, Love, and Sugar’s blog (PS she has the cutest blog with the best sweet treats, please do yourself a favor and go check it out). These moist vanilla cupcakes with a whipped almond filling and a mixed berry frosting are definitely at the top of my favorites list now.

After all the food prep, we got in some lazy time, catching up on TV and cat-napping before heading up to Ethan’s. We loaded our plates up with cecina tacos, Bailey’s cookie balls (Steve has really been holding out on us with his whole “I don’t know how to cook/bake”persona because these cookie balls were great), seven layer dip, cupcakes, and margaritas before heading out to the backyard for some friendly games of cornhole. Poor Jess and Jake had to carry me every round because I was lucky if my bean bag even grazed the board. We got a lot of good laughs about mine and Steve’s attempts at throwing though. Note to self: telling Steve to give the bag a little arc results in the bean bag being thrown straight up into the air and not getting anywhere near the board. When it got too chilly, we headed inside to play Joking Hazard, which is a super fun game where you build your own three-panel comic strip from a deck of cards. Super inappropriate and hilarious for sure. My favorite part of the night was the Jenga game Dell brought. It was just regular Jenga but she had written different “cues” on each block, such as “thumb master” where everyone had to put their thumb on the table when the thumb master did and the last person to do so had to drink. Or cues where the shortest or tallest person had to take a drink. There were so many good ones, I definitely can’t wait to play again. There really is nothing better than a night of games, storytelling, and laughing until your stomach hurts with truly great friends. And hanging out with Bear, of course. 

Sunday morning was spent at church singing praise songs and beginning a new study on prayer. The sermon was a great reminder that God is with us no matter what and there is nothing too big or too small for Him to handle, you just have to ask. Sunday was my mom’s birthday, so after church we met my parents at El Nopal for lunch to celebrate. And really, why not have Mexican food for the third day in a row? There is no such things as too many tacos. We caught up about all the gossip and family matters and it was just nice to have a relaxing lunch together. We came home to finish up all the fun adulting stuff like laundry and tidying up the house. A few weeks ago, Josh had made homemade dog treats and they were such a big hit he decided to make more. We recently got the cutest little bone shaped cookie cutter from a friend and couldn’t wait to use it for these treats. We headed over to my parents house to share the delicious cupcakes Josh had made on Saturday. My mom loves cupcakes, so it was the perfect treat to take for her birthday. It wasn’t long after we got there that we all had to scarf one down. There really was no eating it slow and savoring it, it was just too darn good! Ariel and Rocko got to try the bone shaped treats, so they didn’t feel left out. Somehow the weather was picture perfect (we’ve had like a solid week of rain and gloom and flooding)- fluffy clouds dotting the bright blue sky with the sun shining down, so we sat out on my parents’ back patio and soaked it all in. I can’t wait to have a finished backyard like theirs someday, so we can just relax and enjoy the outdoors whenever we want. Now onto a new Monday, new week, new goals!

Dead Cars & Doughnuts

What a start to the weekend! I got up early on Saturday so that I could make it to the gym for a quick lifting session/workout and be home in time to get ready for girl’s day with two of my besties. Got dressed, stuffed my face, grabbed my bag and keys and headed out to my trusty old Accord…or so I thought. The first weird thing I noticed was that unlocking the passenger side door didn’t unlock the driver side door like usual.  I headed over to the driver side, stuck the key in the lock, turned it, and nothing happened. So I returned to the passenger side, me and my giraffe legs climbed awkwardly across my gym bag to the driver seat and unlocked the door. Awesome, great, both the doors unlock and open now. What is not so awesome and great? That the engine doesn’t even turn over when the key is turned in the ignition. And by this time, my hubby has already left for the gym in our other trusty newer vehicle. I grabbed my bag and bad attitude and came back in the house. So I wasn’t going to make it up to the gym, but I reminded myself we have a lot of great equipment in our garage gym and there was no reason I couldn’t still lift and do my workout. After a slow start (read bad attitude), I finally started getting into the swing of things and hitting all my programmed snatches and push presses. I even got an awesome workout of rowing, sit-ups, and hip extensions in after lifting. Although the morning didn’t go as planned, it turned out better because I didn’t have to rush at the gym to make it home in time to get ready for girl’s day.

Kalee, Des, and I headed down to Louisville for our first stop at Hi Five Doughnuts new store! We’ve been huge fans of theirs for over a year, stopping at their doughnut truck whenever we had a chance, so it was super fun to stop into the store for the first time. I got a Fruit Loop Margarita and a Snickers doughnut.

After Hi Five, we made our way over to the Flea Off Flea Market to meet up with our friend, Ashley, and Kalee’s sister, Kara. It’s such a cute flea market full of food trucks and vendors carrying everything from art, jewelry, and fresh pickled vegetables and jellies to succulents, handmade wooden signs, and homemade dog food. Honestly, the people watching is half the fun- outfit of the day went to a man wearing a Stone Cold Steve Austin shirt and skin tight acid wash jeans with elastic-banded ankles! After wandering around the vendors, it only made sense to head over to the food to try out all the delicious choices. We can definitely all put down some food. I headed straight for Hi Five’s doughnut truck for their warm doughnut holes covered in peanut butter glaze and mini chocolate chips. And lucky for me, Lousiville Cream had a booth next to them so I got a serving of Moonlight Blue (cream cheese ice cream swirled with truffle brownies and blueberry ganache) to smother over my doughnut holes. I mean, who needs “real” food when you can eat dessert instead?

I came home from an awesome girl’s day trip to a freshly mowed lawn, a big pot of veggie chili on the stove, and cupcakes in the oven. Homemade dark chocolate cupcakes filled with salted caramel and dark chocolate buttercream. Can you tell I’m obsessed with sweets yet?? If not, let me ask you this- was there any better way to end my Saturday night than eating a delicious homemade cupcake with ice cream cozied up in bed with your hubby and pup watching “Office Christmas Party”?
